Services for Triangle Women

Volunteer Programs

As a nonprofit organization The Women's Center relies on volunteers from the community to facilitate programs and maintain the quality of services available.  Volunteers provide outreach to women in our community.  If you are interested in volunteering at The Women's Center, please browse the volunteer opportunities below.  For a volunteer application or for more information, call our Volunteer & Operations Coordinator at 919-968-4610 or email volunteer@womenspace.org.  You can also go to our volunteer application page, print it out, fill it on and send it to The Women's Center.

Direct Service

Position: First Response Volunteer

Contact: Volunteer and Operations Coordinator,

Duties: Act as a first contact to individuals who call or walk-in the Center. Provide information, support and community referrals to Triangle area women and sign clients up for programs and services. 

Commitment: 6 months minimum  

Skills Required: 6 hour training required and 6 hour observation.

  • Strong communication skills.

  • Ability to work with people from a variety of backgrounds.

Hours: Volunteers work one weekly shift of 3 hours.  

FRV trainings are typically held in, September, January, and May.

Position: Volunteer Mentor, Teens Climb High

Contact: Coordinator of Adolescent Programs, 919-968-4610

Duties: 

  • Mentors are matched with a girl (age 11-14) from the TCH program. Mentors and their mentees participate in a wide variety of activities together, such as doing homework, cooking dinner, or going to a movie. Mentors develop a supportive, one-on-one relationship with their mentee, and are available to talk about a variety of life issues.

Commitment: One year*

Skills Required:

  • Mentors must be female and 21 or older
  • Need access to transportation (preferably a car)
  • Should be mature, responsible, caring and work well with youth
  • All new mentors must participate in training sessions provided by Teens Climb High staff

Hours: Mentors commit to the program for one year* and spend a minimum of two hours a week with their mentee.
(*some exceptions are made on an individual basis. Please talk with the Teens Climb High staff if you are interested in volunteering, but cannot commit for a full year)

Additional volunteer opportunities are available with Teens Climb High throughout the year including after-school assistant, event volunteer, or program provider. Please contact Antoinette Greer for more information about these positions.

Position: Media Literacy Volunteer, The M.A.G.I.C Project

Contact: Director of Adolescent Programs, 919.968.4610

Duties: Volunteers are needed to help with curriculum development and marketing. In addition, there are some opportunities for volunteers to provide programming to middle and high school youth groups.

Commitment: Varies

Skills Required:

• Knowledge and interest in the field of media literacy.
• The ability to work well with youth.

Hours: Varies

Position: Career Counselor - No volunteers currently needed for this position

Duties: To work one-on-one with clients with varying levels of need for career guidance and advice. Topics include: career exploration, resume writing, cover letters, job search strategies (including networking), interviewing, goal setting, etc. Also, volunteers have the opportunity to provide workshops on any career-related topic. Commitment: 1 year

Skills Required:

  • Strong communication skills (counseling skills recommended), including excellent verbal and listening skills; ability to engage client in career discussion; excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate ideas and strategies effectively
  • Ability to gather information from client; ability to assess client needs and address them appropriately
  • Ability to work with people from a variety of backgrounds and with varying educational levels and career aspirations
  • Professional presentation of self; dependability; punctuality
  • Effective public speaking/presentation skills (for those interested in providing workshops)
  • Ability to work independently
  • Training is provided on how to address general career issues

Hours: Minimum one appointment per week

Position: Financial Counselor - No volunteers currently needed for this position

Duties: To provide one-on-one counseling sessions to clients regarding budgeting, credit, financial goal setting and related issues. In addition, financial counselors make referrals to resources in the community as necessary. Learn more about Community Financial Counseling.

Commitment: 1 year

Skills Required:

  • Strong communication skills, including excellent verbal and listening skills; ability to engage clients in discussion regarding personal finances; excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate ideas and strategies effectively
  • Some experience with finance and/or direct service with clients strongly preferred
  • Ability to assess client needs and address them appropriately
  • Ability to work with people from a variety of backgrounds and with varying financial goals
  • Professional presentation of self; dependability; punctuality
  • Effective public speaking/presentation skills (for those interested in providing workshops)
  • Ability to work independently
  • Training is provided on how to address general budgeting and credit issues

Hours: Minimum one appointment per week

Workshops & Support Groups
Position: Community Education Workshop Facilitator

Duties: To facilitate workshop or social group on a topic of your choice.  Interested volunteers will be sent a program proposal form. (Or download here, required Adobe Acrobat). See workshops currently offered.

Commitment: Varies.

Skills Required:

  • Experience or knowledge in topic of workshop

  • Experience facilitating or teaching a group.

  • Ability to work with people from a variety of backgrounds.

Hours: Varies.

Position: Clinical Program Facilitator

Duties:   To facilitate workshop or support group on a topic of your choice.  Interested volunteers will be sent a program proposal form. See support groups currently offered.

Commitment: Varies.  

Skills Required:   

  • Mental Health degree (Master's level) and clinical experience with groups, workshops.

  • Ability to work with people from a variety of backgrounds.

Hours: Varies.

Committees
Position: Development Committee

Contact: Executive Director, 919-968-4610

Duties:  The committee oversees the planning and coordination of fundraising efforts outlined in the Fundraising plan. This will include:

  • the annual fundraising campaign (Annual Appeal)
  • solicitations for special matching funds and challenge grants
  • solicitations from corporations
  • planning special events/benefits/activities/workshops

Commitment: Members are asked to commit to at least one year. Committee meets as needed, usually once a month.

Skills Required:

  • Previous non-profit development or fundraising experience (suggested)
  • Knowledge of The Women's Center and its programs and services
  • Knowledge of the community

Hours: Varies.

Position: Art Show Committee for The Women's Center Annual Luncheon and Crafts Sale

Contact: Director of Special Events, 919-968-4610

Duties: Varies with subcommittees. Subcommittees include Luncheon, Underwriting, Raffle, Program and Crafts.

Commitment: Three months.

Responsibilities: Vary by committee, but may include:

Planning the Luncheon
Securing underwriting
Planning the exhibition
Working with craft artisans
Securing donations for raffle
Publicizing the event
Hours: Varies.

Many one-time positions are also available if you are interested in volunteering to work at an event during the week of the art show. This year's Annual Luncheon and Crafts Sale will be Friday, March 2, 2007 from 10:30am to 2:30pm. (Click here for information about changes to our art show event this year.)

Position: Public Relations Committee

Contact: Volunteer coordinator, 919-968-4610

Duties:  

  • Create publicity materials and marketing materials for The Women's Center (tasks needed include writing copy, designing materials, and creating marketing strategies)
  • Offer public relations and marketing advice to The Women's Center, including helping develop marketing plans
  • Assist with the implementation of the marketing plan of The Women's Center

Commitment: Members are asked to commit to at least one year.

Skills Required:

  • Experience and knowledge in Public Relations, Marketing, Advertising, Communications or Development

Hours: Committee meets once a month year-round. Members take on tasks throughout the year.

Administrative

Position: Historian

Do you love putting together scrapbooks and photo albums? The Women's Center needs a volunteer to create an album to archive our history the last few years. Requirements: a great visual eye, creativity, enthusiasm, skilled at detailed work, and dependability. We'll provide the album, pages, and photos/news clips. You provide ideas and put it all together.

Position: Herstory Historian

Would you like to interview women and write up their stories? We need someone to write The Women's Center's herstory for the last five years. Next year, 2004, is The Women's Center's 25th anniversary. Our Herstory was written for the first twenty years of The Women's Center's existence. This volunteer will complete it from 1998 to present. You will interview past executive directors, past and present board members, volunteers and other people related to The Women's Center; research newspaper articles and Center publications; and then synthesize, consolidate and write up the most pertinent information from the research into the rest of our Herstory. Excellent writing skills and strong interviewing skills required.

Special Events 
Position: Art Show Events Volunteer

Duties: Volunteers are needed to help staff our annual art show special event.

Skills Required:  

  • Varies with positions.  Positions include: Greeters, Registration Table, Art Sellers, Silent Auction Sellers, Crafts Sellers, Raffle Sellers, Information Table Volunteers, Runners, etc.
