Legal Programs

The following legal services are available through The Women's Center:

Legal Information Service (LIS):

The Women's Center's Legal Information Service (LIS) provides the opportunity to speak with a volunteer attorney by phone for 15 minutes to discuss legal issues including divorce, child custody, consumer law, tenants' rights, etc. This service may help you clarify your legal issue(s). Attorneys offer information only, not advice, consultation, or representation. Call The Women's Center at 919-968-4610 to schedule a free evening appointment. This service is only available for residents of North Carolina.

Now Available! Free Consultations with Immigration Attorney. As part of LIS, volunteer immigration attorney Alice Glover will now be taking evening phone appointments. She provides legal about green cards, immigration papers, citizenship, permanent residency, lawful status, visas, naturalization, and asylum. Call The Women’s Center at (919) 968-4610 to schedule an appointment.

The Community Legal Project

UNC law students are available for 30-minute in-person appointments to discuss your legal questions. After your initial appointment, the law student researches your issue, composes a memo with relevant information, and meets with you for a follow-up consultation. The law student consults with an attorney before presenting information to you. This service may help you clarify your legal issue(s). Family Law in North Carolina (in English)

Newly revised fifth edition now available! Drafted by attorneys, the Family Law in North Carolina guide is written in an easy-to-read question and answer format and provides information about separation, divorce, domestic violence, child custody, child support, and property settlement.

Copies are available for $15 on a sliding scale in English and Spanish. Choose one of the following options to get your copy:

La Ley Sobre La Familia, Según el estado de Carolina del Norte (en Español)

¡Conozca sus derechos! Hecho un borrador por abogados, una guía escrita en una manera fácil a leer en un formato de preguntas seguida de respuestas. El libro se próvida información sobre separación, divorcio, violencia domestica, custodia de los niños, apoyo de los niños, y adjudicación de propiedad. This valuable resource provides detailed information about local attorneys, including their specialty areas and fees. Please come by The Women's Center and visit the Resource Room to read this material.

Legal Clinics

A variety of legal clinics are offered throughout the year to arm you with information and help you deal with your legal issue.

VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance)

UNC Law students are available for one-hour appointments to provide free tax assistance for low- to middle-income individuals of any age. Appointments are held at The Women's Center on Wednesday evenings 5:00pm - 7:00pm starting February 6 through April 10, 2008. Appointments must be scheduled in advance. To participate in this program, you do not have to be a United States citizen; however, you must have either a Social Security Number or an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN). Please call us at 919-968-4610 to answer any questions and/or to schedule your one hour appointment. Appointments are also available in Spanish.
