Legal Information Service (LIS)
The Women's Center's Legal Information Service (LIS) provides the opportunity to speak with a volunteer attorney by phone for 15 minutes to discuss legal issues including divorce, child custody, consumer law, tenants' rights, etc. This service may help you clarify your legal issue(s). Attorneys offer information only, not advice, consultation, or representation. Call The Women's Center at 919-968-4610 to schedule a free evening appointment. This service is only available for residents of North Carolina.
The Community Legal Project (CLP)
UNC law students are available for 30-minute in-person appointments to discuss your legal questions. After your initial appointment, the law student researches your issue, composes a memo with relevant information, and meets with you for a follow-up consultation. The law student consults with an attorney before presenting information to you. This service may help you clarify your legal issue(s). Law students offer information only, not advice, consultation, or representation. Call The Women's Center at 919-968-4610 to schedule a free evening appointment.
Family Law in North Carolina (in English)
Newly revised fifth edition now available! Drafted by attorneys, the Family Law in North Carolina guide is written in an easy-to-read question and answer format and provides information about separation, divorce, domestic violence, child custody, child support, and property settlement.
Copies are offered for $15 (plus $4 for shipping) on a sliding scale, and are available in English or Spanish. Choose one of the following options to get your copy:
- Purchase copy(s) of Family Law in North Carolina online
- Download the order form and return it by mail or fax
- Stop by The Women's Center to buy a copy or
- Call us at 919-968-4610 to order a copy with a credit card.
A copy is also available for use in our resource room during business hours.
Please note that the laws detailed in the Family Law Book are specific to North Carolina.

Pro Se/Do It Yourself Divorce
The Women’s Center offers Pro Se/Do it Yourself Divorce Workshops* throughout the year. These workshops provide forms and assistance to prepare individuals, who meet eligibility requirements, to represent themselves in a court proceeding for divorce. Check our detailed listing for requirements and upcoming workshop dates. Each workshop is free and open to men or women. Space is limited; please call 919-968-4610 to register or email the program director for more information. Next workshop: Wednesday, September 29, 6:00pm-7:30pm.
*In order to complete a Pro Se or Simple Divorce, you must (1) be separated from your spouse for at least one year, (2) have no marital assets or property to divide, and (3) have no child custody issues to resolve.
Introduction to Separation and Divorce
In addition to the Pro Se/Do-It-Yourself Divorce Workshops, The Women’s Center will also host regular workshops on the legal aspects of separation and divorce in North Carolina. This workshop will be conducted as a general group consultation. The facilitators will provide information on child support, spousal support, child custody, and property division. The various ways of resolving these issues (e.g., mediation, negotiation, collaborative law, and litigation) will also be addressed. The workshop will be presented by attorneys, John Miskey and Sarah Carr. For more information, please see our detailed flyer or call 919-968-4610. Upcoming workshop dates: Tuesdays, September 7th and November 2nd from 6:00pm – 7:30pm. Registration is required due to limited space!
VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance)
UNC Law students are available for one-hour appointments to provide free tax assistance for low- to middle-income individuals of any age. Appointments are scheduled in advance and are held at The Women’s Center on Wednesday evenings February through April. For further information or to schedule an appointment please call 919-968-4610. Appointments for the 2009 tax season will be available mid-January 2009.
