Outstanding Jurors Chosen for The Women's Center’s 22nd Annual Art Show
CHAPEL HILL (4 November 2005) – The Women’s Center announces Sally Bowen Prange and John Rosenthal as jurors for its 22nd annual art show Through Women’s Eyes, By Women’s Hands.
Prange was once referred to as a “local institution” by Chapel Hill pottery lovers because of her contributions to the pottery history and pottery making in the Chapel Hill and Durham art communities since 1955. Prange’s porcelain works are in 15 permanent museum collections including the Victoria & Albert, London, England; Smithsonian, Washington, D.C.; N.C. Museum of Art, Raleigh, N.C.; Ackland Art Museum, Chapel Hill, N.C. Prange has shown her work in galleries across the nation, has participated in exhibitions in the United States, England, Japan and Italy and has taught workshops in both the United States and England.
Rosenthal’s photographs have been exhibited throughout North Carolina and the southeastern United States. A few of Rosenthal’s exhibits include Chapel Hill, Duke, Wake Forest, the Ashville Museum of Art, the School of Design at North Carolina State University, the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland, the National Humanities Center, the National Academy of Science and The Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art.
Rosenthal’s commentary on photography and related matters has been heard on WUNC-radio, an affiliate of National Public Radio and on NPR’s All Things Considered. A book of Mr. Rosenthal’s photographs, Regarding Manhattan, was published in 1998, and in 2006 Mr. Rosenthal’s work will be included in Quartet: 4 North Carolina Photographers.
Prange and Rosenthal will choose approximately 100 pieces from over 600 submissions The Women’s Center expects to receive. From those pieces they will choose this year’s prize winners.
The purpose of Through Women's Eyes, By Women's Hands is to support women and the arts by providing female artists the opportunity to display and sell their work. This is critical since female artists are underrepresented in galleries, museums and shows when compared to their male counterparts. Forty percent of the art sales and the proceeds from the events surrounding the art show will benefit The Women’s Center.
Through Women’s Eyes, By Women’s Hands will take place Feb. 17 – 26, 2006 at the Sheraton Chapel Hill Hotel. Opening Night, which includes the preview party, will take place on Friday, Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. and the annual luncheon will be held on Feb. 24.
