THE WOMEN’S CENTER’S 22nd ANNUAL ART SHOW THROUGH WOMEN’S EYES, BY WOMEN’S HANDS
CHANGES PEOPLE’S LIVES

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (5 December 2005) – Barbara* needed to find work. . . fast. Newly separated, she and her teenage son had been scraping by financially as she had searched for a job. The longer Barbara had no luck in landing a position, the more her self-confidence eroded. Finally, she turned to The Women’s Center, straightened out her financial situation and landed a full-time job.

Without funds raised through The Women's Center’s annual art show, Through Women’s Eyes, By Women’s Hands, women like Barbara would have no place to go to get the support they needed to manage life changes such as the one Barbara faced. The purpose of Through Women's Eyes, By Women's Hands, which will take place Feb. 17 – 26, 2006 at the Sheraton Chapel Hill Hotel, is to support women and the arts by providing female artists the opportunity to display and sell their work. The show also raises funds that are critical to the continued operation of The Women's Center. Forty percent of the art sales and the proceeds from the events surrounding the art show will benefit The Women’s Center.

Barbara utilized The Women's Center’s financial counseling program to create a budget, improve her money management skills, and figure out how much income she needed. She then turned to the career counseling program, called New Choices. . . Strategies for Success. With her career counselor, she practiced her interviewing skills, learned how to negotiate salary, and learned job search skills. After a month, Barbara had a paycheck.
