Art In the Evening: an Art Lovers Event
Featuring Music by Ann Humphreys and Greg Hawks

CHAPEL HILL, NC (1 February 2005) – A special event for lovers of art, music and good food will be held on Thursday, February 24, from 8–11 p.m. as part of The Women's Center's 21st annual juried art show and sale, Through Women's Eyes, By Women's Hands, February 18-27, 2005, at the Sheraton Chapel Hill Hotel. The event, “Art in the Evening,” will feature local musicians Ann Humphreys and Greg Hawks.

Together Humphreys and Hawks knock out powerful versions of country and bluegrass standards as well as traditionally-influenced originals. Their vocal harmonies echo the Louvin Brothers, Loretta Lynn, Emmylou Harris, Sam Cooke, Doc Watson, Jimmy Martin and the Stanley Brothers to name a few. Regularly featuring talented guest musicians on mandolin, fiddle, and bass, the duo's acoustic guitars and tight harmonies form the core sound of a compelling melange of traditional inflections.

The event, with a $20 cover charge that includes great food, is part of a series of events surrounding Through Women's Eyes, By Women's Hands, the largest juried show of its kind in the Southeast and a celebration of the vision and voice of North Carolina women artists. Forty percent of the proceeds from art sales and all net proceeds from show events benefit The Women’s Center.

Art in the Evening is meant for those who love both visual art and music. The featured guests, Humphreys and Hawks, are well-known in the local music scene.

Humphreys got her first guitar as a high-school graduation present from her grandmother, who always thought she had the prettiest voice. A native North Carolinian, she grew up listening to her dad's bluegrass and cosmic cowboy albums, and in the last few years she has been lucky enough to sing and play with John Howie Jr. of the Two Dollar Pistols, as well as perform solo. She has also recorded and performed with her brother, Greg Humphreys, of the local soul band Hobex. Her clear soprano voice has both the ring and the ache of our best-loved country divas.

Hawks has been singing and playing in North Carolina for the last 20 years, meeting with local acclaim in recent years in front of his band TheTremblers, an original rock-country-honkytonk outfit. Greg's distinctive voice also found a home as the main songwriter and singer for two local bluegrass bands, Solid Ground and, more recently, Bluemont Road. A native Tar Heel, Hawks’ lifelong exposure to traditional music and dedication to the art of acoustic guitar-picking have made him a remarkable live performer.
