NEWS RELEASE
AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR LEE SMITH TO BE HONORARY CHAIR FOR THE WOMEN'S CENTER'S 20TH ANNUAL ART SHOW

CHAPEL HILL--The Women's Center welcomes award-winning author Lee Smith as the honorary chair for the 20th annual art show Through Women's Eyes, By Women's Hands. She will speak at the art show luncheon on February 27 at the Sheraton Chapel Hill Hotel.

Lee Smith is the author of three story collections and nine novels, including her latest, The Last Girls. Her stories and articles have appeared in publications including The New York Times, GQ Magazine, Redbook, and Atlantic.

A retired professor of English at North Carolina State University, Smith has received many awards including the Academy Award in Fiction from the American Academy of Arts & Letters and the Lila Wallace/Readers Digest Award. The Raleigh News & Observer has described her writing as "simply marvelous," and the New York Times Book Review called the author "nothing less than masterly."

"We are absolutely thrilled that Lee Smith will serve as our Honorary Chair and featured speaker at the Luncheon," said Elizabeth Preddy, 2004 art show chair. "Lee writes beautifully about the lives of interesting and exciting women. I am sure that our Luncheon guests will be both entertained and inspired by Lee's talk."

Through Women's Eyes, By Women's Hands is an annual exhibition and fundraiser sponsored by the Women's Center. The event gives women the opportunity to display their artistic talents since they are underrepresented in galleries, museums and shows compared to their male counterparts. One-third of the proceeds from each art sale, as well as proceeds from the events surrounding the show, will benefit The Women's Center.

The show is on February 20-29, 2004, at the Sheraton Chapel Hill Hotel. Doors will open for the Preview Party and Silent Auction on Friday, February 20 at 7:30 p.m. On Friday, February 27, the luncheon and craft sale will be from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The mission of the Women's Center is to support Triangle area women in achieving their personal and professional goals through information, education, referral and support services.
