Outstanding Judges Chosen for The Women's Center's 19th Annual Art Show Through Women's Eyes, By Women's Hands

CHAPEL HILL--The Women's Center announces Moreton Neal and Wendy H. Outland as jurors for the 19th annual art show Through Women's Eyes, By Women's Hands.

Moreton Neal is an interior designer and arts editor of WDNC's "Better Living Show." She studied art with the late Vernon Pratt at Duke University. She taught studio art prior to opening Chapel Hill's famous restaurant, La Residence, in 1976, with her late husband Bill Neal. She and former Women's Center board member Margaret Skinner initiated the first Women's Center Art Show at La Residence in 1985. Neal continued to host the benefit until 1991. Since then, she has organized the art show's displays ten out of the last eleven years.

Wendy Outland has been the manager of Blue Spiral 1, a fine art and craft gallery in downtown Asheville, since 1991. Her background includes more than twenty years of professional visual arts experience in administration and hands-on exhibition coordination. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Ringling School of Art & Design. Prior to moving to North Carolina, she was employed with the Florida Department of State for ten years. Outland initially worked at Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, where she was Assistant Registrar and project manager for the International Rubens Symposium in 1982. She then relocated to Tallahassee, where she managed the state's public art program, as well as five exhibit spaces at the Capitol Complex. Outland has served on the Board of Directors for the Asheville Area Arts Council and has been editor, grants panelist, presenter, juror, and curator for numerous projects and events.

"We are so honored to have both Wendy and Moreton as jurors for this year's show," stated Mimi Fountain, co-chair of the Art Exhibition Committee at The Women's Center. "Their presence and expertise ensures that the show will once again be of extremely high quality."

The purpose of Through Women's Eyes, By Women's Hands is to give women the opportunity to display their artistic talents since they are underrepresented in galleries, museums and shows compared to their male counterparts. One-third of the proceeds of each art sale, as well as the proceeds from the events surrounding the art show, will benefit The Women's Center. The two jurors will choose approximately 100 pieces for the show from the over 300 submissions The Women's Center usually receives.

"Through Women's Eyes, By Women's Hands" will take place February 21-28, 2003, at the Sheraton Chapel Hill Hotel. Doors will open for the Preview Party and Silent Auction on Friday, February 21, at 7:30 p.m. On Friday, February 28, the luncheon and craft sale will take place from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m.

The mission of The Women's Center is to support Triangle area women in achieving their personal and professional goals through information, education, referral and support services.

* The show is free and open to the public starting Saturday through Feb. 16. Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday.
