Adolescent Programs
The Women’s Center offers two programs for adolescents:
- Teens Climb High (TCH)
- M.A.G.I.C. (Media Analysis of Gender & Image Construction)
Teens Climb High (TCH) is an empowerment program for middle school girls from low-income families in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. TCH provides participants with comprehensive support to make positive life choices and avoid teen pregnancy. Girls begin TCH in 6th grade and typically remain in the program until they graduate from middle school. The program includes a number of components including:
- After-School Sessions: All girls participate in weekly group sessions that focus on health and comprehensive sexuality education, healthy relationships, communication, decision-making skills, and goal-setting.
- Leadership Opportunities: 8th grade girls have the opportunity to apply for our peer leadership team, acting as after-school assistants for 6th and 7th grade groups and coordinating enrichment activities for the program. Each peer leader will receive a small stipend for completing these tasks. Also, as a part of the program’s leadership opportunities, all TCH participants complete a media-based service learning project each year.
- Enrichment Activities:Girls participate in special events throughout the year. These activities focus on team building, outdoor recreation, and exposure to valuable cultural experiences.
- Individual and Family Support TCH staff members maintain regular contact with families and school personnel to help parents and students connect with community resources. TCH staff also helps increase communication among parents and their children through parent activites and workshops.

This manual is a resource intended to promote adult-teen communication about media and sexuality, so that young people can learn to independently analyze media messages and develop healthy media habits. Available for free online. Hard copies can be purchased by calling 919.968.4610 or by emailing your request. What is Media Literacy?
Media literacy education gives students the knowledge and skills they need to analyze and evaluate media messages so that they can independently decide whether to accept or reject those messages. By engaging in this process, students are able to avoid unhealthy or destructive behaviors that are encouraged overtly or covertly by the media, and thus live more authentic, healthy and productive lives. Media literacy education can be an important and meaningful component of academic, prevention or intervention curricula.
