About The Women's Center

Overview of The Women's Center

Founded in 1979, the mission of The Women's Center is to partner with women and girls to build their knowledge, skills, and confidence to become self-sufficient. We do this by providing the following services and programs:

The Women's Center serves over 4,500 individuals from Orange, Durham, Chatham and Wake counties each year. Utilizing a small staff and a network of dedicated volunteers, we strive to provide an atmosphere of trust and acceptance.

The Women's Center's services and programs are funded in part by the Triangle United Way, the Towns of Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Hillsborough, and Orange County. Funding also comes from the state of North Carolina. The Women's Center depends on individual contributions, program fees, and special events such as Tea with Lee and Through Women's Eyes, by Women's Hands.

Many of The Women's Center's services and programs are free, and those with fees are available on a sliding scale basis. No one is turned away due to the inability to pay.

Located in a house in the historic district of downtown Chapel Hill, The Women's Center is a place open to all women and girls. Many of our services are also available to men in our community. Please stop by The Women's Center, email us, or call us at 919-968-4610.

The Women's Center's Vision and Values Statement:

Vision:
Our vision is that every woman and girl is self-sufficient. The Women's Center will be the catalyst to ensure that the full range of needed services is accessible through our own work and community partnerships. We envision a community in which:

  • All women achieve financial equity and security through meaningful employment, living wages, and access to affordable housing.
  • All women gain equal access to quality, affordable legal, mental health, and emergency assistance services.
  • All adolescent girls have the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to make healthy choices now and in the future.
  • All women have opportunities to grow, learn new skills, and give support to one another.
  • All women have a greater ability to advocate for themselves and for the collective interests of women.

Values:

  • INCLUSION - Our clients, staff, and volunteers represent a diverse cross-section of Triangle women. We support and reflect our community.
  • SERVICE - We believe that our clients are best served by our “first stop” support, training, and education, along with referrals to appropriate organizations and agencies.
  • COLLABORATION - We work hard as a team to achieve optimum results for our clients. We respect all with whom we serve and work. We honor all voices.
  • INTEGRITY - We act with integrity by providing our clients with comprehensive resources so that they may seek the best options in approaching their problems and issues. We earn their trust by setting high standards of confidentiality, compassion, and care
