Teens Climb High (TCH)

Past Service Learning Projects

Teens Climb High (TCH) is an empowerment program for middle school girls from low-income families in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. TCH provides participants with comprehensive support to make positive life choices and avoid teen pregnancy. As a part of the program’s leadership opportunities, all TCH participants complete a media-based service learning project each year.

These are the Past Service Learning Projects by year:

2002

In 2002, the participants decided to address their concerns about sexual harrassment and assault by holding a “Sexual Safety Action Day” at the South Estes public housing community. The girls created performance pieces (rap and step) about sexual safety. They also held a bake and lunch sale to raise money for the Orange County Rape Crisis Center. TCH was the co-recipient of an annual Youth Achievement Award from the Adolescent Prengnacy Prevention Coalition of North Carolina for the completition of this project and the 2003 project.

2003

In 2003, participants completed a mural exploring the theme, “Creating Safe and Healthy Community.” The TCH girls took photographs of activities that represented positive community to them, worked with an artist to incorporate those images into a mural design, and then painted the 8’ x 24’ mural which now hangs in the gym at the Hargraves recreation center in Chapel Hill. TCH was the co-recipient of an annual Youth Achievement Award from the Adolescent Prengnacy Prevention Coalition of North Carolina for the completition of this project and the 2002 project.

2004

In 2004, TCH girls hosted a “Turn Beauty Inside Out” event in Chapel Hill. “Turn Beauty Inside Out Day,” is a national event and is part of an ongoing public education coordinated by Mind on the Media. The girls incorporated their original photography and writing into collages representing “inner beauty.” An exhibit of the artwork was displayed Street Scene Teen Center, which is located beneath the post office on Franklin Street.

2005

In 2005, the girls created video public service announcements (PSAs) and a documentary, “Pregnant at Fourteen.” The topics of the girls’ videos included safe sex, teen pregnancy, sexual harassment and assault, and substance abuse. TCH worked with the Peoples Channel on this project. The girls’ final work was aired on Channel 8 in July of 2005.

2006

In 2006, the girls worked with UNC Media Center to create a website to educate teens and pregnancy prevention. By participant request, the website was translated into Spanish.

2007

In 2007, TCH created a magazine that focuses on sexuality and sexual health for teens. The final product was distributed to local youth centers, such as the Hargraves Center, YMCA, and Street Scene Teen Center.
